What is IAS Exam?

Indian Administrative Service or IAS is the most sought for competitive examinations that can give your career a big lift. This examination, which recruits to various Civil Services of the Indian Government, is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

Exam pattern

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts a three tire examination for recruitment of the various IAS positions. These three tires are-

  • A preliminary exam (which is generally conducted in the month of June),
  • Mains examination (which generally takes place in November or December) and
  • Lastly the personal interview round (which is conducted in March).

The final result of personal interview (declaring list of candidates who are selected to serve in various civil services positions of the Indian Government) is published in the month of May.

Prelims exam is more of a preliminary scrutiny of the IAS aspiring candidates and hence the marks secured in prelims are not counted for ranking. However, you should not take your prelims examination for granted. The ranking is based on the marks that you obtain in mains and personal interview.

Prelims contain objective type questions asked from two papers- General Studies and CSAT. Mains contain nine papers (including two optional papers for the candidates to choose). In mains English language and regional language papers are qualifying in nature. The remaining papers (Essay paper, four GS papers and two optional papers) along with the marks obtained by a candidate in personal interview are considered for merit.

How to prepare

Considering the huge and ever increasing number of IAS aspirants one can easily make out how tough and competitive IAS exam must be. A serious preparation is a must to get through this one year long exam that covers a really huge syllabus.

Eligibility criteria to appear for IAS

Any Indian individual, holding a graduation degree in any subject is eligible to appear for this examination. Final year graduation students can also sit for IAS exam. However, there are limits to the number of attempts for IAS examination and hence if you have not prepared well for the prelims; it is better not to sit for the exam. For the general category candidates the number of maximum attempts is 6, while it is 9 for an OBC candidate. A candidate belonging to the SC/ST category can sit for IAS for unlimited number of times till they attain the upper age limit fixed by UPSC.

Competitive exams and your preparation

It is the season of competitive exams. For a lot of us, our respective careers and futures depend on how we fare in these exams. So it is quite natural that doubts should arise in our minds about how to go about preparing for these exams. Joining a coaching centre is almost a matter of parental as well as peer pressure. But is it really necessary?

Well, no doubt if one is clear about one’s goals, it is entirely possible to clear any exam without any external help. However, that requires a level of dedication and focus that is not fair to be expected from young adults. Joining a coaching centre helps in more ways than merely covering a set syllabus of study. The business of studies is a serious business and even though we might frown at the blatant commercialization, it cannot be denied that coaching centres provide concrete results.
