Finally, all those hours of hard work spent preparing for the board and graduate exams have paid off. The next logical step is obviously to look for and land a lucrative, secure job. Sure, there are plenty of jobs for deserving people. There are jobs in the private sector where it is ‘easier’ to get, especially with the right connections but private sector jobs are often stormy and stressful. Most private companies’ policies are the ‘hire and fire’ type. You perform or you perish, these jobs are far from secure, have erratic and long work hours, inflexible company policies, no work-life balance, tight leave schedules etc. The employee becomes more of a ‘salaried bonded labor’. That’s not exactly a very attractive proposition.
Enter Central Government Jobs
But another band of jobs that are the first choice of people, especially graduates, are the Central Government jobs. The reason is quite obvious: Central Government job is safe, secure, transparent terms and conditions of service, handsome pay and perks with regular increments, comfortable work/life balance etc. Of course, the compensation comes with immense responsibilities and that can be stressful too, but there is no hire and fire policy to scare the employee. Once inside one is set for a lifetime of comfortable work-life.
It pays, therefore, to work in a central government department or government company or undertaking under any ministry. One can opt for Railways, Civil Aviation, Shipping, Posts and Telegraph, IT, Judiciary, Education, Defence, Finance, Space Research, Police, PSUs, Banking, Income Tax etc.
In short, with compensation like attractive monthly salary + dearness allowance + house rent allowance, a lucrative gratuity of 15 days pay for every work-year, bonus, terminal benefits like pension, provident fund, etc, the central government job is every job aspirant’s dream job worth fighting for. According to official figures, in 2015 there were 17, 86,047 candidates who appeared in SSC CGL exams. In 2016 over eight lakh candidates appeared. In 2017 there are over one lakh plus central government job vacancies available for the taking.
SSC CGL Way to Central Government Jobs
Now the next question is: how does one get such a job? The answer is: through the Staff Selection Commission Common Graduate Level Examinations or SSC CGL. This commission is mandated by the central government to make recruitment to all groups B, C and group D stenographers’ posts in various Ministries/ Departments of the Government of India, conduct exams and/or interviews and postings accordingly.
Candidates need preparations, different from the boards. This is the preparation for life itself. This isn’t so easy a task as another round of preparations becomes the absolute necessity, which is fine, as students fresh from the board or graduate exams are obviously used to preparedness. SSC conducts the examinations at two levels:
(a) 10+2 or Combined Higher Secondary Level (CHSL)
(b) Graduation Level or Common Graduate Level (CGL)

How easy is the exam?
