Career choices in core engineering (Part 1)

Engineering is an ever-growing profession with new fields of study and job opportunities being added regularly. Core engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electronic, telecom etc. are quite a hit while there are new fields coming up, thus opening up new job opportunities.

Engineering is a profession which has had many takers since years. The wide variety of disciplines on offer provides a window to many technical students. Engineering talent in India is popular worldwide and Indians have made a mark across the world with their prowess.

NASSCOM had come up with Engineering council 2013-15 to develop India as a global and competitive engineering destination. It aims to set up Center of Excellence (COE) in core engineering disciplines and make India a, Engineering Research & Development market. It also aims at making India self-reliant in Engineering Technology.

India already has over 750 ER&D companies that provide their services to global companies for developing and designing their products. With so much happening, there are bound to be a whole lot of jobs for engineering graduates. In fact, the engineering industry is projected to become a $37-45 billion industry by 2020.

 

Job opportunities in core engineering:

  1. Chemical engineering: This field of engineering focuses at using physical and biological sciences for converting chemicals into more valuable forms. It has various sub-disciplines like Biomolecular, Materials, Molecular and Process engineering.
  2. Civil engineering: It is about constructing and maintaining environments. Environmental, Structural, Transport, Geotechnical, Water resources are the five sub-divisions under it. All these heads have further sub-disciplines.
  3. Electrical engineering: This discipline involves the study of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. It is further divided into four parts- Computer, Electronic, Optical and Power engineering. Computer engineering is further divided into Software, Hardware and Network engineering. Electronic also has two parts – Control engineering and Telecommunications.
  4. Mechanical engineering: Students studying mechanical engineering learn about the operation of machines through analysis and usage of heat and mechanical power. It has four disciplines – Acoustical, Manufacturing, Thermal and Vehicle engineering. Here only vehicle engineering offer three more choices- automotive, naval and aerospace engineering.
