The Indian Foreign Service (IFS) traces its roots to British law, specifically the need to conduct business with “Foreign European powers.” In 1947, the UK government’s Diplomatic and Political Department became the new Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Commonwealth Relations. In 1948, the first batch of IFS officers was recruited under the Union Public Service Commission’s common scheme of civil service examination. The primary mode of intake into the IFS has been through this examination system.

4. Indian Revenue Service

The Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers start as adjutants to the income tax in Group A. The Union Public Service Commission conducts the Civil Service Examination for recruitment at this rank. The IRS plays a vital role in Indian direct taxation, especially in the fields of income tax and wealth tax. IRS officers handle the direct tax laws and regulations for the Income Tax Department (ITD).
