From Banaras Engineering College to IIT BHU

IIT Varanasi, popularly known as IIT BHU, was founded in 1919 by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya as Banaras Engineering College (BENCO). In 1968, it became Banaras Hindu University before becoming IIT Varanasi in 2012.

The institute was the first in India to offer degree classes in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmaceuticals, and Metallurgy. Over the years, IIT BHU has expanded by leaps and bounds and now has 14 different departments with 3 interdisciplinary schools. As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework, IIT BHU is 2018’s 19th top engineering college in India.

Situated in the holy city of Varanasi, IIT BHU has the largest residential campus throughout Asia which is spread across more than 1,300 acres of land. It has a total of 14 hostels for the students, medical facilities, library facilities, gymkhana, and host of councils like cultural, film and media, and science and technology to ensure that the students always have something more beyond the academics.

Workshops at IIT BHU

IIT Varanasi or IIT BHU has a Main Workshop (MW) offering facilities like CNC Machine Shop, Sheet Metal Shop, Carpentry Shop Lab, Machine Shop Lab, Welding Shop Lab, Electroplating Shop Lab, Fitting Shop Lab, and more to provide hands-on experience to the students.

Apart from this, a number of workshops, seminars, lectures, and conferences are organized on a regular basis to help the students know more about the technologies and innovations currently being used in industries. Such events are attended by reputed dignitaries from many different walks of life to provide an all-embracing learning experience.

Some of the most popular workshops at the institute revolve around the latest technologies like IoT, Augmented Reality, Robotics, Mobile Development, IT Security, and Ethical Hacking. Under QIP, IIT BHU also offers a number of short courses on subjects like Wireless Sensor Networks, Computational Biology and Neuroscience, Steel Technologies, and more.

In 2008, the Malaviya Center for Innovation, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship (MCIIE) was established at the institute. The objective of the MCIIE is to establish startups and ensure that the program is financially viable. The bridge does and Internlelo is some startups produced by MCIIE. Currently, it offers 3 programs- OLPE (Open Learning Program in Entrepreneurship), EDAP (Entrepreneurship Development and Awareness Program), and TBI (Technology Business Incubator).

Schedule for Workshops at IIT BHU

 The IIT BHU workshops help students sharpen their skills and provide them an opportunity to interact with great visionaries, industry leaders, and innovators. Moreover, as these events are generally attended by professionals from some of the biggest of companies like Reliance, Wipro, and more, they are also an excellent opportunity for the students to network and get guidance for their careers.

Technex

This is a techno-management festival organized at IIT BHU every year. It is one of the oldest student festivals in the country which was first organized at the institute in 1939. While the event has changed several names over the years, it still continues to be one of the biggest student festivals in India and is attended by lakhs of students from more than 500 colleges.

Spread across three days, the event consists of various workshops, think tanks, and exhibitions. Simulation challenge, corporate conclave, and startup fair are some other elements of the event which draw several students.

WAC

The What After College (WAC) workshop is a unique event organized by Vidyavilla Foundation across several IITs, including IIT BHU. The event is focused on helping students select the right career after completing their studies. Attended by academicians, education experts, and top industry professionals, the event and its workshop provide excellent insight into different industries and their potential to the students.

During the event, many different workshops too are organized to help the students improve their skills. Workshops like Ethical Hacking, Android App Development, Robotics and IoT Development, and Auto Mechanics are some of the student favorites during the WAC event at IIT BHU.

Summer Workshops

Apart from the events mentioned above, IIT BHU also conducts a number of summer workshops for the students. Some of the recent ones include 45 days workshop on Machine Learning Applications to Internet of Things and 60 days workshop on Machine Learning and Deep Learning for Computer Vision.

Who Can Attend Workshops at IIT BHU?

There are only a few IIT BHU workshops and events which are not open to students from other colleges/universities. The registration for such events is done online and students from other universities/colleges can register themselves for these events by paying the applicable fees and submitting the required documents.

How to Reach IIT BHU?

The cultural capital of India, Varanasi, has well-established transport networks. Most students generally prefer rail or air travel to reach IIT BHU. If you are planning to travel by air, the Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport in Babatpur is closest to the institute. From the airport, IIT Varanasi is about 30 km. One can easily find a cab at the airport and the fare for reaching the campus from the airport is about Rs. 600.

Alternatively, you can also travel by train and reach either the Varanasi Cantt. Railway Station (Junction) or the Mughalsarai Railway Station. IIT BHU is only 10 km. from the Varanasi Cantt. Station and you can find autos and taxis at the station. Fares generally range between Rs. 300 to Rs. 350 for taxi and Rs. 120 to Rs. 150 in auto.

If you’ve reached the Mughalsarai Railway Station, the campus is about 20 km. from the station. Taxis and auto rickshaws are available at the station and fares for the same would range between Rs. 350-Rs. 350 for a taxi and around Rs. 200 for an auto.

Accommodation in Varanasi

Accommodation is provided by the institute for many of the workshops and conferences. You can check the details of the workshop you are planning to attend to know whether or not the institute would be providing accommodation. Even if you are required to arrange the accommodation on your own, there are plenty of hotels available for every budget.

But as Varanasi is also a very popular tourist destination, it’d be better if you book the hotel in advance, especially during the winter months which is when the most number of tourists visit the holy city.
