LUCKNOW: The three-month-long traditional sports competition at Raj Bhawan came to an end on Wednesday with the governor Anandiben Patel handing over the prizes to the winners.
Encouraging the players at the closing ceremony, Patel said, “Sports play an important role in everyone’s busy life. We all must take some time out for sports every day. Because it keeps a person mentally and physically healthy.”
Batting for consumption of coarse grains, Patel said, “If one organize their diet and routine, and includes yoga in their life, then one will always be healthy. We must promote traditional games in order to keep us fit.”
According to OSD to the governor (education), Pankaj Jani, a total of 15 traditional sports were included in the Raj Bhavan sports competition, in which a total of 1,097 players participated, including 200 women.
He informed that 54 players, including 16 women and 38 men, secured first position in various sports including the traditional sports competition. “Traditional sports reflect our heritage. But today, they are forgotten. With the inspiration of the governor, for the last three years, competitions have been organized in the Raj Bhavan premises along with training for these traditional games,” he said.
Not only Raj Bhawan, traditional sports are held in state universities. Shanu Baratwal and Rumi won the most medals. In the traditional sports competition, 25-year-old Raghavendra Pratap got the first position in long jump by jumping 16.2 feet while eight-year-old Alok Kumar got the first position in long jump by jumping 8.8 feet. In addition, 45-year-old Ajay Kumar Singh secured first position in shot put competition with a distance of 42.3 feet.
