NEW DELHI: The Bombay High Court will pass its verdict today in the plea challenging the 75 per cent eligibility criteria for Joint Entrance Examination, JEE Main. The petition claims that the eligibility criteria of 75% for JEE Main is unfair on the part of the students as it is not a reflection of their abilities.
Bombay HC Chief Justice SV Gangapurwala and Justice Sandeep V Marne took up this matter on March 1, 2023. The case was adjourned for another hearing on April 6, 2023, when the court asked the government and National Testing Agency to produce all the relevant documents and data related to 75% eligibility criteria for Joint Entrance Examination Main 2023. After several hearings, the final verdict will be pronounced today, if a relaxation can be granted.
The 75 per cent eligibility criteria rule was made in 2017-18. However, it was temporarily suspended during the COVID pandemic. Representing the National Testing Agency (NTA), the additional solicitor general Anil Singh and counsel Rui Rodrigues argued that the students were well aware of the changes.
During the hearing, the Government and NTA completely ruled out the possibility of a third attempt for JEE Main. The NTA has already conducted the JEE Main exam twice – January and April 2023. The testing agency is scheduled to conduct the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) 2023 in the month of June.
A total of 1,11,3325 candidates took the JEE Main Examination 2023, out of which 2,51,673 have qualified for JEE (Advanced). Among those who qualified are 2,685 candidates from the PwD category, 98,612 from General, 67,613 from Other Backward Class (OBC), 37,563 from Scheduled Castes (SC), and 18,752 from Scheduled Tribes (ST).
