NEW DELHI: The Indian government has issued a travel advisory to its citizens in Canada, asking them to take extreme caution and remain vigilant due to the deteriorating security situation in the country. The advisory comes in the wake of a series of anti-India incidents in Canada in recent months, including the recent diplomatic row between India and Canada.
Canada is one of the most popular destinations for Indian students to study abroad. In 2022, Indian students made up 15.3% of all international students in Canada. This makes India the second-largest source of international students in Canada, after China.
Advisory issued
The Ministry of External Affairs, on September 20 released an advisory for Indian Nationals and Indian students studying in Canada.
The notice, which was released on the official website of the Ministry of External Affairs reads,
“In view of growing anti-India activities and politically-condoned hate crimes and criminal violence in Canada, all Indian nationals there and those contemplating travel are urged to exercise utmost caution.”

The notice further advised that Indian students in Canada to register to themselves with the High Commission of India in Ottawa or with the Consulates in Toronto and Vancounver through their respective websites or the MADAD portal- madad.gov.in
The motive behind the portal is to facilitate seamless connectivity between the consulates and Indian citizens staying in Canada, in the event of any untoward incident or emergency situation.
What is the MADAD app?
The MADAD (Consular Services Management System) portal is used by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to address grievances related to consular services offered by Indian Missions/Posts abroad. Indian students studying/planning to study abroad can also register on the portal to facilitate contact by the nearest Indian Missions/Posts, if need arises.
Steps to register in MADAD portal
Step 1: Go to the official website – https://madad.gov.in/AppConsular/welcomeLink
Step 2: Select the ‘Indian Students Abroad Registration’ option.
Step 3: Input your personal information, including your name, date of birth, and email address.
Step 4: After completing the registration, log in using your provided username and password.
Step 5: Access the ‘Manage Profile’ section to include additional information.
Step 6: Navigate to ‘Manage Course Details’ to enter specifics about your course and educational institution.
