Indore: Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College authorities have decided to restore the 145-year-old building of King Edward Medical (KEM) School as a library for medical students.
The KEM school is located on the campus of a medical college. The proposal to restore it was hanging in balance for many years.
But now the medical college authorities prepared a detailed project report for the restoration of the building and turning it into a library. The authorities have decided to spend around Rs 1 cr for this work.
The KEM School was established in 1848. The MGM came into existence in 1953, around a century later. The KEM School is an example of French Gothic style architecture, and it is even famous as ‘Hogwarts’ among the city’s youth.
“KEM School building is the symbol of our heritage and development of medical education in Indore. It was one of the oldest medical schools of the country and we would soon restore it to bring its mystique,” MGM dean Dr Sanjay Dixit said.
“We have planned to start a library and may also use part of the building as the museum. Our main aim is to maintain and preserve the building,” Dr Dixit said.
“The DPR is prepared, and the medical college would spend rupees one crore on it,” Dr Dixit added.
The proposal to develop KEM school was made in the past to restore the structure including one for developing it into a café. Not a single proposal sees the light of the day.
Further, the medical college also develops sports facilities for the students. “We have also prepared a plan to develop tracks, badminton courts, and other sports facilities for the students on the ground behind the KEM School,” Dr Dixit added.
