NEW DELHI: The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday announced that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has been granted deemed university status. Pradhan announced this while addressing the 63rd Foundation Day Celebration Programme of NCERT in New Delhi.
“Today, I want to announce that we are granting the status of deemed to be university to NCERT,” he said.
As the top organisation for school education, the NCERT undertakes various activities and programmes, including educational research and innovation, the development of curriculum, and the development of textual and teaching-learning materials.
The education minister also called for the merging of Bal Vatika and Bal Bhavans with the NCERT to “provide holistic education to children.”
The NCERT was founded under the Society Act in 1961 with the primary purpose of providing assistance and guidance to the government in the realm of school education.
Institutions granted the status of ‘deemed-to-be-university’ benefit from the academic status and privileges of a university.
With the status of a deemed university, NCERT will offer its own graduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees.
Pradhan also inaugurated three labs, of which one lab on teacher training centre and another on virtual reality education.
