Founding story of IIT Bhubaneswar

Established in July 22, 2008, IITBBS initially started functioning from IIT Kharagpur campus and later on 22 July 2009, it shifted its base to Bhubaneswar city. From academic session 2015-16, IITBBS started operating from its permanent campus at Argul.
Started with only 94 students in three undergraduate programmes, now, IITBBS accommodates over 2000 students in different streams, over 128 faculty members and plenty of support staff in its beautiful campus spread over 936 acres.

IIT Bhubaneswar: A Well-rounded knowledge hub that goes beyond classrooms
When it comes to thinking beyond academics to offer the best ambience to encourage different qualitative approach among the students, IIT Bhubaneswar is at par with other seven IITs. Organizing regular conference, debates, seminars workshops etc IITBBS provides many opportunities for its students.
IIT Bhubaneswar has a students’ government organization, Gymkhana, that encourages students to participate in different activities and follow their interest in sports, cultural activates or technology. IITBBS has also garnered nationwide coverage by hosting the most coveted and popular annual techno-management festivals of Eastern India, Wissenaire.
Besides, the formal undergraduate and postgraduate courses, IIT Bhubaneswar also offers several short-term programmes or GIAN(Global Initiative of Academic Networks) approved courses for students to hone their expertise in different subjects.
While some courses are designed for engineering or MSc students, a couple of short-term GIAM approved programmes such as the applied cyber-security course that can be attended by anyone has interest in cyber-security tools or analytics.

Wissenarire tech-fest
Held in Argul, permanent campus of IIT Bhubaneswar, Wissenaire is the most awaited annual techno-management festival of IITBBS. Encompassing different areas of science, technology and management, this three-day long extravaganza includes quizzes, robotics, coding, designing etc to display the innovative spirit and technological skill of budding engineers.
This most awaited technical festival of East India is slated to start next year from 2nd February at IITBBS main campus. Every year thousands of students from hundreds of premium institutions across the country take part in the Wissenarire fest.
As a part of this tech-fest, IITBBS organizes several discussions, seminars and workshops with veteran industry leaders. The workshops are held on the campus as well as at several other major cities across the country. While Wissenarire allows participants to send their designs through online for the initial selection, the final rounds of the Tech Exhibits are held at the IITBS campus.

Who can attend Workshops at IITBBS?
IITBBS organizes workshops and seminars for both on-campus and out campus students from different colleges across the country. There are several GIAN approved courses and WAC workshops, which are designed to enhance students’ skill, are open to all young aspirants across all the institutions. However, a few of the on-campus short-term programmes and GIAN workshops are only open for IITBBS students. Before enrolling in any of such courses, make sure to check your eligibility on the registration page of the particular course you are looking for.

How to Reach IIT Bhubaneswar?
As one of the largest cities in Orissa, Bhubaneswar is well connected with the rest of India by rail, road and air. While the permanent campus at Argul is 30 km from the Bhubaneswar City, the city campus at Toshali Plaza (Satyanagar) is just 5 minutes drive from the Bhubaneswar Railway station.
The nearest station for IITBBS main campus is Khurda Road junction. You can either take an auto or taxi to reach IITBBS campus from Khurda station and the journey takes approximately 25 minutes. While the private taxi fare ranges around 350–400 INR, the auto may charge you around 150-200 INR.
The distance between Baramunda Bus Stand, Bhubaneswar to IITBBS is approximately 30 km. You can check the bus schedule of the IITBBS transport and catch the IIT Bhubaneswar buses, which run from Bhubaneswar to Permanent Campus, Argul and KGP campus.
The nearest airport from IITBBS is Bhubaneswar Biju Pattanaik International Airport located 35 km away from the campus. There are several flights run daily from Bhubaneswar airport to other major cities like Kolkata, New Delhi, Kanpur, Mumbai and more. It takes approximately 20 minutes to drive from the Bhubaneswar airport to the IITBBS main campus.
Accommodation at Bhubaneswar
While for some particular IITBBS organized workshops accommodations are provided directly on the campus, for other events students are asked to arrange their stay outside the campus by themselves. Famous for its architectural monuments and temples, Bhubaneswar is a very popular tourist’s place in East India and has a wide variety of well-furnished hotels catering to all budgets. Make sure to confirm the accommodation with the event organisers much ahead of the actual event.
