The Purva Vibhag Sarvajanik Vachanalaya, Solapur Library is the oldest Public Library in India. The Solapur east side people requested to Head Shri. Hirachand Nemchand Vachanalay for a library in east side to fulfil this demand. The library was established by Hon.Shri.K.D.Puranik(Director of State Library, Maharashtra), on 18th April 1973 and the name was changed to “Purva Vibhag Sarvajanik Vachanalay, Solapur” on 4th April 1975 and the first executive board was selected on 1st June 1975.
Library is arranged section wise for every department. Every section has a separate department like a Mukhtdwar Department, Computer Department, Children Department, Reference Department, Telugu Department, Competitive Exam Department. Mukhtdwar Department is nothing but the reading area. Here,all books are available for reading as well as newspaper reading facilities are available in Mukhtdwar Department of the Library.
