Let’s Understand The Pattern First

Most of the student want to know How many questions to attempt in CAT? The CAT exam has a total of 66 questions of 198 marks in total divided into three sections VARC, DILR, and QA. Each section has a time limit of 40 minutes making the total exam of 120 minutes (2 hours). The exam has both objective (MCQs) and subjective (TITA) questions and contains 3 marks for each right answer and -1 for each wrong answer; however, there is no negative marking in case of TITA questions.

 Now Let’s Understand Each Section Thoroughly, 

  • The first section is Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension which contains 24 questions in total (19 MCQs and 5 TITA) within the 40 minutes time limit. The sectional weightage of this section is 37% and one must attempt at least 14-16 questions from this section to score a good percentile. 
  • The second section is Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning which contains 20 questions in total (15 MCQ and 5 TITA) with the same 40 minutes time limit. The sectional weightage of this section is 30% and you should attempt at least 10-12 questions from this section. 
  • The third and last section is Quantitative Ability which contains 22 questions in total (14 MCQ and 8 TITA). The sectional weightage of this section is 33% and at least 12-14 questions should be attempted from this section for scoring a good percentile. This section generally contains maximum questions from Arithmetic and others on Log, Algebra etc.
