The Aviation industry
An engineering student has a whole lot of options when it comes to choosing the field he/she wants to specialise in. Aviation engineering is one such branch where you can explore your love for the flying machines – airplanes and spacecrafts. One can also choose to work in air traffic control. But that requires one to be very responsible.
Air traffic control:
Working in this wing means you are responsible for safe air travel of the passengers. One also needs to ensure orderly flow of traffic and no mid-air collisions. Various positions under air traffic control include-radar control, clearance delivery position, surface movement control, aerodrome control and approach control unit.
Education: One has to have a degree in BE. Specialisation in electronics is an added bonus. You need to be very good at mathematics to make quick aircraft specification-related calculations.
Where to study: Civil Aviation Training Colleges and Regional Training Centres for aeronautics.
Airport Authority of India (AAI) recruits the maximum candidates who are trained at Civil Aviation Training Colleges spread across the country. Licence is issue by AAI in different aspects.
Salary: Starting as a Junior Executive Trainee (JET), one can earn around Rs. 17,000. The scale increases with promotion as Assistant Manager, Senior Manager and so on and so forth up till Executive Director.
Aerospace engineering: Engineers opting for aerospace engineering can choose either from – aeronautics or astronautics. Aeronautics deals with researching, designing and operation of aircrafts while astronautics is about spacecrafts.
Education: One should have completed 10+2 with PCM as subjects to take up a degree programme. You can also choose to take up a certificate or diploma courses. However, it is advisable to do a degree programme.
Where to study: Many institutions offer courses in aerospace but check if they have been approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Jobs: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) recruits the maximum aeronautical engineers. Civil Aviation Department, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are other options. Besides, the market in US, UK and other countries is also open for Indian engineers.
Aviation engineering has vast scope and studying in the field can prove quite fruitful.
