There is a sudden surge in job opportunities in lighting industry for engineers. With the LED lighting already taking over the market, job prospects have increased. Once manufacturing in India gets on the high note, things will get even brighter for engineers.
Lighting industry for engineers
The lighting industry has suddenly created a whole lot of jobs for engineers. These are not restricted to design, research, testing and validation, but also provide them scope to work in manufacturing, sales and business sectors. The industry is expected to grow manifold by 2020. Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru are the upcoming hubs of lighting industry. Some notable companies hiring light engineers include Philips, GE, Wipro, Orient, Crompton Greaves and Syska LED.
Currently, manufacturing industries have the highest demand while the entertainment and media sectors also require them. LED is the latest fad in the lighting circles and competition for even better lighting sources is continuously increasing. This demands more skilled professionals, thus, opening doors for engineers.
There are three kinds of roles that an engineer can play in the lighting industry:
- Design engineer: Multinational companies have a limited demand for designers. They need to understand the requirements and specifications and then develop a detailed design for Light Emitting Diode (LED) boards and systems. They also need to run tests for their created designs. They work together with quality check teams for regular validation.
They also need to select the right electronic manufacturing service (EMS) for pilot runs and test labs. This careful selection will help the company get the required certificates.
A candidate vying for a place in the lighting industry should have a thorough knowledge of his domain and strong networking ability. He/she should be proficient in PCB computer-aided design (CAD) software. One should also understand the basics of LED and PCBs well. Good communication skills are a boost and can get a light engineer great rewards and benefits.
A Bachelor of Engineering (BE) degree or Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) is communications and electronics is a must.
