The General Studies Paper-II is a qualifying paper with a minimum passing mark set at 33%. The question papers are available in both Hindi and English.

The syllabus for Paper I includes current events of national and international importance, the history of India and the Indian National Movement, Indian and world geography, Indian polity and governance, economic and social development, general issues on environmental ecology, biodiversity, and climate change, and general science.

Paper II focuses on comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning and analytical ability, decision making and problem-solving, general mental ability, basic numeracy, and data interpretation.

It is mandatory for candidates to appear in both papers of the Civil Services (Prelims) Examination for evaluation. The cutoff marks for the UPSC Prelims have varied over the years, with the minimum qualifying marks ranging from 46.61% to 63.11%.
